The Catholic Church recognizes seven sacraments, instituted by Christ Himself, which are outward signs of an inward grace acting in our souls.
Baptism:
The Sacrament of Baptism is the first of the seven sacraments not only in time but in priority. The receiving of the other sacraments depends on Baptism. It is the first of the three Sacraments of Initiation (followed by Holy Communion and Confirmation). Once baptized, a person becomes a member of the Church. Baptism is necessary for salvation and is the very mark of a Christian because it brings us into new life in Christ.
Infant Baptism at OLP:
Requirements:
- Parents must be practicing Catholics and promise their support in raising their child in the Catholic faith.
- Registered parishioners at Our Lady of the Pillar. If not registered and living in the boundaries of another Catholic Church, a letter from that parish pastor giving permission is required.
- For the baptism of a first child, parents must participate in a Baptismal Preparation Class. Call the parish office (314-993-2280) to schedule your class.
- Choosing a God Parent (Sponsor) is extremely important. The role of these individuals is to assist the parents in passing on our Catholic Faith. Parents should select those who will take the role seriously and who are considered good role models for the child. The minimum age for a sponsor is 16 years of age and the sponsor must have received the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Communion).
Frequency / Timing:
Baptisms are scheduled by appointment only. Call the Parish Office, 314-993-2280 Ext 200, to schedule a baptism or to schedule a Baptismal Preparation class.
